My name is Thora Asgeirsdottir, I am a Costume Designer and Maker from Iceland, based in the UK. What interests me most about Costume Design is the research process and how that process can lead you to create a character with the help of a costume.

I completed my studies in MA Historical Costume at AUB, Bournemouth in September 2021. During my studies I concentrated on costume design for film and television, as well as theatre, with specialisation on period costumes and dress history. I also did some costume making, including millinery and corsetry during my MA, but I did more making, tailoring and draping during my BA studies in Fashion Design. I did began sewing at a very young age, so that has always been a part of my life.

Before I began my career in costumes I did a BA in Fashion Design at Iceland Academy of the Arts, in my hometown Reykjavik. I have been interested in dress history since I can remember and during my fashion studies I often found inspiration from dress history books and online research on dress history, as you can see in my inspiration and mood board photos. During and after my BA studies I did internships in fashion design and construction in Copenhagen and trend forecasting and research in Paris. These internships were very different and allowed me to practice different skills and tasks, these included trend and concept research, fabric sourcing, shopping and returns, dress making, draping, styling and setting up show rooms. All of which have been useful in my costume career.
